Military Flying and Aircrew Training

Today, military aircrew are required to fly agile multi-engine helicopters, processing complex operational information at high speeds and often at low level in harsh environments. This places new demands on training, with good flying skills being just one of the modern pilot’s core competencies.

AgustaWestland provides high performance, versatile, safe, reliable, cost-effective helicopter solutions to meet the demanding requirements of a wide range of civil and military customers, including military flying training. Our Training Solutions include a range of 2 to 6 ton helicopters, with the capability for embedded and Collective Training Systems (including simulation of defensive aids and weapons systems) for role training, supported by comprehensive ground based training environments.

The AW109 family, together with AgustaWestland’s established and professional training services, provides the total training solution for today’s frontline pilots. The AW109 is a twin engine, eight seat helicopter that provides a modern, safe and versatile training platform. It has twin Full Authority Digital Engines Control (FADEC), retractable wheeled landing gear, modern IFR capable cockpit and high performance flight characteristics that emulate the majority of frontline helicopters. Handling qualities are well suited to critical training tasks including autorotations and Automatic Stabilisation Equipment (ASE) failures. The spacious cabin with large sliding doors also enables it to be used for Search and Rescue (SAR) and gunnery training.

The AW109 Power’s modern cockpit is single or dual pilot IFR capable and is equipped with liquid crystal multifunction displays and a 3-axis duplex autopilot. Predictable, forgiving handling together with high levels of power reserve, clear cockpit visibility and good ergonomics ensure a user friendly and safe environment for the student and instructor. Fail-safe design features and built in redundancy, together with crashworthy seating and fuel system, further enhance the AW109 Power’s high levels of safety. The aircraft in its military variant (AW109 LUH) is equipped with a full digital glass cockpit to support modern military training. With a maximum cruise speed of 154 kts, a large cabin (5.1 m³) and external hoist capability, the aircraft is able to meet military training needs, including decision making at high speed and supporting download from operational conversion units.

The Grand sits at the top of the light-twin category, providing capabilities typical of larger, intermediate-category helicopters. Its large cabin volume (5.55 m³) and 1.4 m wide cabin doors provide comfortable accommodation and excellent accessibility. The highly versatile interior makes the Grand suitable to a number of applications. It is also an excellent, high-performance platform for training, equipped with comprehensive, state-of-the-art avionics.

The AW139 medium-twin engine helicopter, capable of carrying up to 15 passengers at 157 kts, has the most spacious cabin in its class (10.53 m³ including cockpit), allowing easy configuration change for operational training for different missions. In particular, the AW139 provides an excellent platform for full crew and SAR operational training, including winch operations over water. Equipped with modern avionics, the AW139 has a 4 or 5-display glass cockpit.

The AW109 and AW139 are supported by the new AgustaWestland ‘A. Marchetti’ Training Academy that provides a wide range of aircrew and maintainer courses. Ground based training environments are managed through a state-of-the-art training management information system, with the latest multimedia, roll-on-roll-off full mission simulators, cockpit procedures trainers and part-task trainers.

AgustaWestland therefore offers a complete package of helicopters and training systems available as turnkey solutions and services to meet a wide range of training needs, preparing today’s aircrew to operate modern frontline helicopters successfully in often challenging situations.
