Equipment and training technologies

AgustaWestland combines specialist training systems skills with the experience gained from aircraft and prime equipment programmes to provide a comprehensive capability, applying modern technologies and innovative training methods to deliver cost effective solutions.

Specific equipment and technologies available from AgustaWestland include:

Training Multimedia

AgustaWestland produces a variety of classroom based training solutions. PC based multimedia techniques, including advanced emulations and desktop simulations within sophisticated training packages, accelerate learning and enhance knowledge retention:

  • Generic Training Packages. A suite of CBT lessons covering the theory behind complex electronic systems. These lessons have been designed so that no pre-requisite knowledge of the subject is required and include features to inform the student and instructor of their progress.

  • Computer Based Training (CBT) and Computer Aided Instruction (CAI). A wide range of electronic multimedia provides flexibility and variety in training delivery and can be made available at almost any location. The applications are tailored to meet specific training needs to the required level of technology. These self-paced CBT and instructor-led CAI packages can also include single and multi-screen delivery systems with video and overhead camera inputs for the CAI.

  • PC based multimedia emulation techniques. Realistic simulations equipment, platform systems and the test equipment. The emulations respond to fault conditions and student input in the same way as the real systems. They improve knowledge transfer and reduce the quantity of high-cost physical training aids required to support instructional activities.

  • Electronic Classrooms. A suite of training media, including the emulations, self-paced learning and instructor-presented material integrated into an ergonomic classroom environment. This includes user-friendly instructor and student management systems to control media selection and track student performance, providing the user with a flexible system that is easy to manage and control.

  • Distance Learning. Training material compatible with web-based technology enabling multimedia and web-based training packages to be implemented across a customer’s Intranet or the Internet.

The AgustaWestland library of developed multimedia is extensive. Examples include:
  • EH101 Merlin multimedia with over 350 CBT/CAI lessons
  • System emulations for the Merlin HC Mk 3 for the UK Royal Air Force
  • BOWMAN Combat Net Radio system: CAI, CBT and system emulations
  • CAI, CBT and system emulations for the A109, NH90, Sea King and Lynx
  • Interactive Electronic Training Delivery
Systems for the UK Apache AH Mk1 and export variants of the Super Lynx helicopter. AgustaWestland also integrates training multimedia with support applications through the application of the international AECMA 1000D and SCORM standards. This approach ensures commonality across projects and the costeffective use of resources. Maximum re-use of data and close links to configuration management provides very effective control of media items and technical content.

Flight Simulators

These sophisticated devices provide a realistic representation of the aircraft throughout a wide range of flight conditions, including emergencies. Supported by comprehensive systems and scenario modelling, they also provide for detailed tactical training. Use of a simulator therefore supports flight safety, improves operational efficiency and can significantly reduce training time in the aircraft.

AgustaWestland has worked with the world’s leading suppliers of simulators to deliver comprehensive simulation services to its customers and has supported the development of major helicopter training services and centres.

Part Task Trainers

Part-Task Trainers are highly effective devices that free the prime equipment and high value training devices from routine or procedural training tasks, leading to significant efficiency savings. Devices available from AgustaWestland include:
  • Cockpit Procedures Trainers. Cost effective devices supporting introduction to service, recurrent and tactical training. These devices are designed to meet the training need and range from Cockpit Familiarisation Trainers to train basic cockpit management procedures, through to Tactical Cockpit Procedures Trainers that cover operational flight procedures and the management of aircraft systems within a realistic tactical environment.

  • Maintenance Part Task Trainers. Physical replications of specific equipment and systems for training maintainers and ground crew. They can be designed for simple remove and replace tasks, or augmented with computer systems to control the training and induce faults for rectification.

  • Maintenance and Weapon Trainers. Full size representations of the airframe, containing a mixture of functional and non-functional systems, with computer control and fault simulation. These devices typically support 1st Line activities, primarily Mechanical and Weapons. They also familiarise students with the system layout and demonstrate the operation of systems.

  • Mission Trainers. Simulations designed to train the procedures and operation of the platform mission equipment. They can include lesson management and record/replay facilities. Scenario models can also be included for tactical training purposes.
